Carey Mulligan was born on 28 May 1985 in Westminster, London, England, the daughter of Nano (Booth), a university lecturer, and Stephen Mulligan, a hotel manager. Carey made her professional acting debut on stage in 2004 in the play Forty Winks by Kevin Elyot at the Royal Court Theatre. She made her film debut with a supporting role in the romantic drama Pride & Prejudice (2005), followed by roles on television, including the drama series Bleak House (2005) and the television film Northanger Abbey (2007). She is best known for her breakthrough role as a schoolgirl in the 1960s in the coming-of-age drama An Education (2009), for which she won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
