Louis Vincent Gerstner Jr. is an American businessman who is best known for his tenure as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of IBM from April 1993 until 2002.
Louis Vincent joined McKinsey & Co., a management consulting firm headquartered in New York City, and by 1970 he had become one of the youngest partners in the history of the firm. He later joined American Express in 1978 as executive vice president and head of its travel-related services division, and became president of the company in 1985.
He served for four years as chairman and chief executive officer of RJR Nabisco, Inc. before joining IBM in 1993. He is also the former chairman of The Carlyle Group and currently serves as the chairman of the board of directors of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and chairman of the board of the Gerstner Sloan Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts. .
