Sam Zell was an American billionaire businessman and philanthropist primarily engaged in real estate investment. He was the founder and chairman of several public companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange, including Equity Residential, Equity LifeStyle Properties, Equity Commonwealth, and Covanta Holding Corporation.
Sam Zell was a master of making complex situations "simple" and could synthesize information into basic concepts and formats. He was a visionary and macro strategist for a broad network of companies and had founded or built hundreds of companies and created thousands of jobs. He was also a pioneer in entrepreneurship education and had a global network of graduates from his programs in the U.S. and Israel. Sam Zell was an active philanthropist, giving millions to the University of Michigan, Northwestern University, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and among others. He was also a major donor to causes in Israel and to the American Jewish community. He was born on September 28, 1941, and died in May 2023 at the age of 81.
